A Roofer’s Opinion on the Best Types of Roofing Materials for the PNW

Gutter Installation provided by Affordable Roofing & Gutter Company.

Over 30 years in the roofing business in the Pacific Northwest (PNW) area have taught me our unique weather demands roofing materials that can handle a lot. Between the steady rain, strong winds, and rare but welcome sunny days, our roofs need to be durable and adaptable.

Consistent rains, persistent moss growth, occasional snow, and fluctuating temperatures mean the right materials aren’t just about appearance but also durability and resilience.

I share all my roofing insights on the best roofing materials in the Pacific Northwest below so you can protect your home for years to come.

The Importance of Choosing the Right Roofing Material for the PNW

The PNW is well known for homes being exposed to water in one fashion or another throughout the year. Constant rain storms, high summer humidity, and mild and harsh winters all beat up on your roof.

You need materials that focus on resisting moisture and stand strong against the high winds coming in from the Pacific.

I always prioritize using materials that prevent mold, moss, and algae growth. These are all typical problems that lead to costly repairs if left untreated.

Drainage is your top defense to avoiding water pooling and potential leaks. The right materials and installation techniques can make all the difference between a roof that last for decades or one that deteriorates in a few years in our region.

The Importance of Roof Cleaning and Moss Treatments

Best Roofing Materials for the PNW Climate (Based on Personal Experience)

After fixing roofs for almost 35 years, I’ve identified the following roofing materials as best for the PNW climate.

1. Asphalt Shingles

Homeowners looking for a combination of quality and affordability should consider asphalt shingles as their top choice. They’re affordable, durable, and hold up well against the rainy weather of the Pacific Northwest.

Whenever I install asphalt shingle roofs, they typically last a good amount of time and do well in rainy weather. One tip I share with clients is to use algae-resistant shingles, which are a great defense against moss and mold growth.

2. Metal Roofing

The big advantage of installing a metal roof is how quickly the water runs off while it’s raining. This is perfect for the PNW because metal roofs resist moss buildup better than wood roofs or other kinds.

I’ve also seen metal roofs last as long as 50 years, and that’s pretty common in the PNW area. The long-term investment is a win-win because they require hardly any maintenance since you don’t have to replace or repair broken shingles.

3. Composite Shingles

I always recommend composite shingles to homeowners looking for long-term solutions without paying a high price tag of metal roofs. I’ve seen them over time become a much more popular alternative to traditional shingles in the PNW and for good reason.

These types of roofing materials are fire-resistant, lightweight, and more eco-friendly. The F-Wave synthetic shingles are a premium choice and budget-friendly compared to other high-end options.

4. Cedar Shakes

Cedar shakes are a true classic aesthetic for the PNW. They have a natural resistance to moisture, which helps in our wet climate. They bring a rustic and authentic look that has complemented the PNW environment for generations.

I have to warn you, though, that cedar shakes require a bit more maintenance than other roofing materials. You’ll need to treat them regularly to resist moss and algae growth, so be prepared for the additional labor or costs.

5. Slate Roofing

If you can afford it, slat roofing is an incredibly durable roofing material that suits the rain-heavy PNW climate extremely well. It’s more expensive but I recommend it because you get what you pay for and I’ve seen these types of roofs last for generations.

They are also aesthetically beautiful and can withstand almost any weather the PNW throws at them. You’ll have a high-quality roof with a timeless style that lasts for decades.

Roofing Materials to Avoid in the PNW

In my 35 years, I’ve noticed that certain roofing materials don’t hold up well at all in the PNW. Here are a couple to avoid at all costs:

  • Clay Tiles: While aesthetically beautiful, clay tiles don’t absorb moisture very well and are prone to cracking in freezing temperatures, and you’ll experience plenty of both in the PNW.
  • Flat Roofs: If you don’t have a slant to your roof, you’ll end up with pools of water. Over time, these cause significant damage without proper drainage and flat roofs don’t hold up well in this region.

Stick to the other roofing materials we mentioned above and you’ll save a ton on long-term repairs.

My Personal Recommendation for Most Homeowners in the PNW

I can’t recommend asphalt shingles or metal roofing enough in the PNW area for most homeowners. Both materials are durable and offer the most protection for our wet, windy climates without breaking your budget.

Ultimately, the best material depends on your budget, home style, and long-term goals. Call Affordable Roofing and Gutter Company today for expert advice on your roofing situation.
